My roots as a mental coach are from tennis. National player when I was a kid, I was exposed very early to a high level of pressure, expectations, and social approval needs.
Looking back, I realised I did my best performances when I was letting myself go, focusing on having fun out there, refraining myself to think too much on the outcome and relying on my instinct. As opposed to this, I had poor results when I was thinking too much about what others would think about me and my game, when I was playing only in my comfort zone and when I was not enjoying the game I chose.
Tennis is indeed a mental game. Players hit the ball only 20% of the time in games. This means that most of the time, they are potentially subject to unhealthy over-thinking, lack of focus and pleasure. They can do self-sabotage. And often, they do.
This is the trap I want my clients to not fall into. This is why I choose to be a mental coach. To help them to maximise their potential. To show them a mental shift often makes a big difference.

Being a professional athlete and coach is not as easy as people think. In my work, I witness everyday how hard and challenging their life can be. People in general only see the tip of the iceberg but it's not only about fans, glory, celebrity, money etc.
Most of the time far away from home, they can't see their families and friends. They are subject to a huge level of pressure and exposure where results, statistics and contracts decide on their future and life. They fear failure. They fear not being good enough.
My role is to help them to rest emotionally thus physically. My role is to get them to the 'trusting' mindset so they distance themselves from unhealthy perfectionism. My role is to remind them the critical role of the 'big picture' on their performance. My role is to make them discovering by themselves that taking 'courageous' actions will make them happier thus better performers. Thanks for your trust guys. I feel privileged.

The coaching relationship with athletes/teams is fascinating. To help them to achieve their goals, trust between mental coach and client is critical. This means that if coaches have to show empathy in a non-judgmental way, active (and genuine) listening, they also have to be challenging enough for athletes/teams so a real change happens.

Reflecting is helpful to enhance performance, but only to a certain extent. Taking concrete actions have even more impact to reach high-performance.

The last couple of weeks, I was asked a few times which coaching model I use in my practice. My answer was the same. My own.

Shortly after starting my activity as a mental coach for professional athletes, I quickly realised that copying other mental coaches, using their models would not suit me. I would lose myself in the process. I would not be impactful. It was definitely not for me.

I then decided to walk in the dark. Trusting myself and my instinct. Building my own models based on both profiles and needs of my clients. Testing those models and adapting them based on feedback. In sum, accepting to be vulnerable. Not an easy move but at the end of the day, how could I reasonably help my clients to trust themselves, to find who they really are if I was not able to do it myself?

Results have been great. I started with semi-professional athletes 4 years ago. I am now working with national teams and some of the best players/athletes in the world.

I learnt one thing in the process. Follow your own path. Be brave. It's worth it.

Amazing and successful experience with the Finnish volleyball national team at the European Championships in Finland/Poland.
We made it to the playoff with 3 wins and only lost against the world champion Poland in front of their home crowd.
Thanks to everyone, players, staff for their hard work for months. We all together did a great job that we should be proud of !

Impactful mental coaching is what all sport psychologists are looking for with their clients. Being the most efficient, as soon as possible, remains the goal. Sometimes, it produces effects quickly. In other cases, it takes more time until the process and the relationship develop. As far as I am concerned, I always arrange a trial with athletes/players/coaches since it needs to 'click' between me and them for the work to be effective and efficient.

This is a piece of feedback I received from an NHL (top American ice-hockey league - New York Islanders) after a trial. That kind of feedback is helpful since it helps us, sport psychologists, to understand the needs, to use our strengths more often (as we advise professional athletes and coaches to do) while trying to do even better the next time ! 💪🏻
